Ingredients
  

  • 6 –8 ripe bananas sliced
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 –3 tbsp turbinado sugar

Method
 

  1. Toss sliced bananas with sugars, butter, water, lemon juice, vanilla, and spices, then let sit.
  2. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  3. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  4. Whisk buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla, then combine with dry ingredients.
  5. Pour banana mixture into a baking dish and spoon batter over the top.
  6. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar.
  7. Bake until golden and bubbling, then cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use very ripe bananas for best flavor and avoid mixing the topping into the filling to maintain the signature crust.
