Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh salmon Skin removed and cut into chunks for easier processing or chopping.
  • 1 large egg or egg substitute A large egg acts as a binder; use an equivalent substitute if preferred.
  • 1/3 cup gluten-free breadcrumbs or almond flour Almond flour provides a different texture and flavor, choose based on preference.
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs Dill, parsley, or chives are excellent choices; use a single herb or a mix.
  • 1 tsp lemon zest Adds a bright, citrusy note that complements salmon beautifully.
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder Provides a savory depth without the sharpness of fresh garlic.
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder Enhances the overall savory flavor of the burgers.
  • 1/2 tsp salt Season to taste; essential for bringing out the flavors.
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper Freshly ground black pepper adds a subtle kick.
  • 1-2 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil Use for pan-frying; avocado oil has a higher smoke point for crispier results.

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Food processor (optional)

Method

  1. Chop the salmon into small pieces or pulse briefly in a food processor until coarsely ground. Ensure skin is removed before chopping.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the prepared salmon with egg, gluten-free breadcrumbs or almond flour, fresh herbs, lemon zest, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently to combine all ingredients without overworking.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form them into evenly sized patties, about 1-inch thick.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a thin layer of olive oil or avocado oil.
  5. Cook the salmon burgers for 3–4 minutes per side in the heated skillet, until golden brown and cooked through. Alternatively, for a healthier option, grill or air fry the patties at 375°F (190°C) for 10 minutes, remembering to flip them halfway through cooking.
  6. Remove the cooked burgers from heat and let them rest for a few minutes. Serve immediately on your favorite buns or lettuce wraps, accompanied by your desired toppings such as sliced avocado, tomato, or a creamy sauce.

Notes

These versatile salmon burgers are delicious on traditional burger buns, or for a lighter option, serve them on lettuce wraps. Customize with your favorite toppings like a squeeze of fresh lemon, a dollop of aioli, or sliced avocado.
