Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground turkey 93% lean
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 can 14.5 oz diced tomatoes
  • 1 can 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 can 15 oz kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can 15 oz black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • Sour cream for topping
  • Shredded cheddar cheese for topping

Method

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in garlic and cook until fragrant.
  4. Add ground turkey and cook until browned, breaking it apart.
  5. Sprinkle in chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, cayenne, salt, and pepper, and stir to bloom spices.
  6. Pour in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and chicken broth, stirring to combine.
  7. Add kidney beans and black beans and gently mix.
  8. Stir in brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce.
  9. Bring to a simmer and cook uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. Stir in chopped cilantro, adjust seasoning, and serve hot with desired toppings.

Notes

Add beans during the simmer stage to prevent mushiness. Taste and adjust salt mid-simmer, as broth sodium levels vary. For a thicker chili, simmer uncovered longer. Always add sour cream just before serving.
