Ingredients

  • 200 g granulated sugar
  • 120 ml light corn syrup
  • 60 ml water
  • 2 tsp Kool-Aid powder any flavor
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 75 g popping candy
  • 100 g black licorice cut into strips

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Candy thermometer
  • Baking Sheet

Method

  1. Measure out all ingredients to ensure a smooth process.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, and water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Once the mixture is bubbling, add the Kool-Aid powder and stir well until it is fully dissolved.
  4. Continue to cook the mixture without stirring until it reaches a temperature of 300°F (hard crack stage). Use a candy thermometer for accuracy.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and quickly stir in the baking soda. The mixture will bubble up; this is normal!
  6. Once the bubbling subsides, fold in the popping candy gently, ensuring it distributes evenly.
  7. Lay the black licorice strips on a lined baking sheet and pour the hot mixture over them, coating thoroughly. Allow it to cool for about 30 minutes until set.

Notes

Ensure to work quickly when pouring the mixture over the licorice, as it will harden fast. Enjoy your homemade candy!
