Ingredients

  • 312.5 g granulated sugar
  • 15 g cornstarch
  • 240 ml water
  • 120 ml corn syrup
  • 2.5 tsp salt
  • 5 ml flavoring (like vanilla or peppermint)
  • 1 packet Food coloring (optional)

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Candy thermometer
  • Greased surface

Method

  1. In a large saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, water, corn syrup, and salt.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and let it boil without stirring until it reaches 270°F (hard ball stage) on a candy thermometer.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in flavoring and food coloring.
  5. Pour the mixture onto a greased surface and let it cool slightly.
  6. Once cool enough to handle, butter your hands.
  7. Begin pulling and stretching the taffy until it becomes shiny and smooth.
  8. Roll the taffy into long strips and cut into bite-sized pieces.
  9. Wrap each piece in wax paper and enjoy!

Notes

Be sure to butter your hands well to prevent the taffy from sticking while you pull it. You can also experiment with different flavors for a unique twist!
