  • 1 lb ground beef Choose lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 1 head cabbage Ensure cabbage is finely chopped for even cooking.
  • 1 cup uncooked rice Long-grain white rice works best for this recipe.
  • 1 onion onion Dicing helps it blend well into the casserole.
  • 2 cloves garlic Freshly minced garlic adds the best flavor.
  • 24 oz tomato sauce Use your favorite brand of plain tomato sauce.
  • 1 tbsp olive oil Extra virgin olive oil is recommended for sautéing.
  • 1 tsp salt Adjust to taste, especially if using salted tomato sauce.
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper Freshly ground black pepper enhances the flavor.

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until soft.
  3. Add ground beef, salt, and pepper. Cook until browned.
  4. Stir in uncooked rice and 1 cup tomato sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Layer half the chopped cabbage in a greased baking dish.
  6. Spread the beef mixture evenly over the cabbage.
  7. Top with remaining cabbage and pour remaining tomato sauce over it.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  9. Remove foil and bake for 15 more minutes.
  10. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

This casserole is a fantastic make-ahead meal. You can assemble it the day before and bake when ready to serve. Leftovers are even better the next day!
