Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef 90% lean
  • 2 cups uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 1 can 10.5 oz condensed French onion soup
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced
  • 1/2 cup crispy fried onions
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter sliced

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown ground beef with garlic powder and diced onions; drain excess fat.
  3. In the baking dish, combine uncooked rice, browned beef, French onion soup, and beef broth; stir well.
  4. Top evenly with sliced butter.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake an additional 30 minutes.
  6. In the final 5 minutes, sprinkle crispy fried onions and mozzarella on top; bake until golden.
  7. Rest 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use long-grain rice for the best texture. Drain beef well to avoid greasiness. For stronger French onion flavor, add caramelized onions or mushrooms.
