Ingredients

  • 2 lbs white potatoes Choose a starchy potato like Russet or Yukon Gold for best mashing results.
  • 1/2 cup butter Unsalted butter allows you to control the seasoning.
  • 1/2 cup whole milk Warm the milk slightly before adding for a creamier texture.
  • 1 tsp Salt Adjust to your preference, remember salt was added to the cooking water.
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper Freshly ground black pepper adds the best flavor.
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley Finely chop for an elegant garnish and fresh aroma.

Equipment

  • Pot
  • Potato Masher

Method

  1. Peel and chop the potatoes into uniform chunks.
  2. Place the chopped potatoes in a pot and cover with cold water.
  3. Add a generous pinch of salt to the water.
  4. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  5. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
  6. Add butter and milk to the drained potatoes.
  7. Mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For extra richness, a splash of cream or a knob of cream cheese can be added during mashing. Ensure potatoes are hot when mashing to avoid a gummy texture.
