Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar Also known as confectioners' sugar.
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk Use heavy cream for a richer frosting, or milk for a lighter texture.
  • 1 teaspoon cotton candy flavoring extract Ensure it's food-grade for best results.
  • a few drops pink or blue food coloring Optional, for classic cotton candy aesthetic.
  • 0.1 tsp salt A small amount to balance the sweetness.

Equipment

  • Electric mixer
  • Large mixing bowl

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition. Once all the sugar is incorporated, add the cotton candy flavoring, 2 tablespoons of heavy cream, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Increase to medium-high speed and beat for another 2–3 minutes until the frosting is light and airy. Add an additional tablespoon of cream if needed for desired consistency.
  4. For a classic cotton candy look, mix in a few drops of pink or blue food coloring until evenly tinted.
  5. Use immediately or store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Notes

This frosting is perfect for cupcakes, cakes, or even as a dip for fruit. For best results, use good quality flavoring extract.
