Ingredients

  • 450 g white fish fillets cod or tilapia, fresh or thawed frozen
  • 2 tablespoon blackening seasoning paprika, cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, black pepper
  • 30 ml olive oil for cooking
  • 8 pieces small corn or flour tortillas
  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • 120 ml Greek yogurt for creamy sauce
  • 2 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 small garlic clove minced
  • 2 tablespoon chopped cilantro optional
  • 1 cup thinly sliced red cabbage
  • to taste salt
  • to taste black pepper

Method

  1. Pat fish fillets dry with paper towels to help seasoning stick and get a crispy crust.
  2. Mix blackening seasoning if making from scratch. Thinly slice red cabbage and chop cilantro. Halve lime and mince garlic. Scoop avocado flesh into a bowl.
  3. In the bowl with avocado, add Greek yogurt, lime juice, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, a pinch of salt, and black pepper. Mash and mix until smooth and creamy. Adjust lime or salt to taste.
  4. Sprinkle blackening seasoning evenly over both sides of the fish and press lightly to help it stick.
  5. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add fish fillets and cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes until edges look opaque and crust forms. Flip and cook another 3 minutes or until fish flakes easily. Thicker fillets may need 1-2 minutes more.
  6. Warm tortillas in a dry skillet over medium heat for 20-30 seconds per side or wrap in foil and heat in a warm oven.
  7. Break cooked fish into chunks and spoon onto each tortilla. Drizzle generously with creamy avocado sauce. Top with shredded cabbage, extra lime squeeze, cilantro, or black pepper as desired.
  8. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

For a spicier kick, feel free to add extra cayenne to the blackening seasoning or top the tacos with your favorite hot sauce.
