Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion onion trimmed and cut for blooming
  • 125 g all-purpose flour for dredging
  • 1 tsp paprika adds flavor and color
  • 1 tsp garlic powder for seasoning
  • 1 tsp onion powder for seasoning
  • 0.5 tsp salt to taste
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper to taste
  • 2 eggs eggs for binding
  • 120 ml milk for egg mixture
  • 100 g Panko breadcrumbs for coating
  • 30 ml vegetable oil for brushing

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Method

  1. Trim about 1/2 inch off the top of the onion and peel; place cut side down. Make 8 vertical cuts from the top almost to the root to form 'petals,' gently spreading them apart.
  2. In a shallow bowl combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. In a second bowl whisk together eggs and milk.
  4. Place Panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  5. Dredge the onion into the seasoned flour, shaking off excess, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat evenly with Panko breadcrumbs, ensuring petals are covered.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Brush or drizzle the oil over the onion and between the petals.
  7. Carefully transfer the onion to the air fryer basket, cut-side down, and cook for 10 minutes. Flip and cook for an additional 5-8 minutes until golden and crispy.
  8. Remove the blooming onion from the air fryer and let rest for 2 minutes before serving.
