  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 cups 1x

Description

Authentic Mexican Champurrado, a thick, comforting chocolate drink made with masa harina, warm spices, and rich Mexican chocolate.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup masa harina
  • 1 1/4 Mexican chocolate tablets (about 4 oz)
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 oz piloncillo or dark brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Dissolve masa harina in 1/2 cup warm water until smooth; set aside.
  2. Heat 2 cups water with cinnamon stick until simmering.
  3. Add Mexican chocolate and piloncillo; stir until dissolved.
  4. Whisk in masa mixture and cook until beginning to thicken.
  5. Slowly pour in milk while stirring constantly.
  6. Simmer 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Remove cinnamon stick and strain for a smooth texture.
  8. Serve hot in mugs.

Notes

Straining at the end ensures a silky, traditional Champurrado texture without masa clumps.
