Are Fried Green Tomatoes Tasty?

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Fried green tomatoes are a crispy, tangy Southern classic. With their golden, crunchy coating and slightly tart interior, they make a perfect appetizer or side dish. Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce for an irresistible treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large, firm green tomatoes

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup cornmeal

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional for extra crunch)

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional for extra flavor)

  • 1 cup buttermilk (or substitute with milk)

  • 1 large egg

  • Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut oil)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes: Slice the green tomatoes into ¼-inch thick rounds. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

  2. Set Up Breading Stations:

    • In the first shallow bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.

    • In the second bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.

    • In the third bowl, combine cornmeal and breadcrumbs.

  3. Coat the Tomatoes: Dredge each tomato slice in the flour mixture, then dip into the buttermilk mixture, and finally coat with the cornmeal/breadcrumb mixture.

  4. Fry the Tomatoes: Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat (about 350°F). Fry each slice for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Drain on a paper towel.

  5. Serve: Enjoy hot with remoulade, ranch, or garlic aioli.

Notes

  • To prevent sogginess, ensure the oil is hot before frying.

  • For a healthier option, air-fry at 375°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through.

  • Experiment with spices like cayenne or garlic powder for extra flavor.
